Benchmark the role, not the title

A ‘senior engineer’ at a 40-person product company and at a large enterprise are two different jobs with two different markets. Benchmark against scope: team size, ownership, technical depth and the commercial impact of the work.

Use live offer data where you can get it

The most useful number is what candidates in this exact market are declining and accepting right now. We track offer outcomes across our mandates, which tends to be six to nine months ahead of published survey data.

Decide the band before the search, not after

Approving a band mid-process costs weeks and usually loses the front-runner. Agree the range, the flex and who signs off on the exception before the first profile is shared.
